Brief Biography

Mr Zuberbuhler is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, refractive lens and laser surgery, and external eye disease. He was appointed director to the cataract services at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2009, where he is training fellows from around the world. Before joining the team in Manchester he was appointed consultant to the cataract service at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He graduated from Zurich Medical School in 1998. Following a year of training in vascular and abdominal surgery and a year of training in intensive care medicine he trained in general ophthalmology at the University Hospitals in Bern (Inselspital) and Lucerne. He completed subspecialty training fellowships in cataract, anterior segment and refractive surgery at the Vista Klinik in Basel, the Leeds General Infirmary, St James University Hospital in Leeds and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Mr Zuberbuhler earned an MD in kidney transplant surgery and a PhD in clinical informatics, developing techniques for the improvement of laser vision correction.

He is main author of the textbooks ?Cataract Surgery? (Springer 2008) and ?Corneal Surgery? (Springer 2011), and has contributed a chapter in a uveitis book. He is active in cataract and refractive research and has published many articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

He is founder and vice-president of the Swiss Cornea Foundation which is supporting patients with corneal diseases and young ophthalmologists in their subspecialist training. Outside ophthalmology his interests are in music and dance. He enjoys spending his time in the Peak District.
