Saj Ataullah graduated in Medicine from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, University of London, in 1991. He has over 14 years of experience in ophthalmology (a speciality dedicated to the medical and surgical management of eye disorders). After 7 years of ophthalmology training in London and Manchester Saj trained extensively in oculoplastic surgery (also called ophthalmic plastic surgery) both internationally and in the UK.
Oculoplastic surgery is a highly specialised form of plastic surgery that focuses on disorders of the eyelids, eyebrows, tear drainage system and the orbit (the bones and tissues that make up the eye socket). This “fellowship” period of super-specialist training was undertaken both internationally and in the U.K.
Saj was appointed as a Consultant Oculoplastic, Lacrimal & Orbital Surgeon in 2002 at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, one of the largest eye hospitals in Europe. He performs over 1000 ophthalmic plastic surgical procedures a year.
Saj Ataullah also has a major role in teaching and training of ophthalmic surgeons:
- He has co-run an internationally renowned fellowship in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital since 2002. During this time he has trained surgeons from around the world as well as the U.K.
- Saj was appointed as the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Tutor for Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2005 and has been closely involved with the appointment, assessment, appraisal and training of approximately 30 junior doctors who are based there at any one time.
- He has published in international peer-reviewed journals and has presented scientific papers in The USA, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, and Belgium as well as the UK.
