Dermal Fillers
Face & Eye uses a proprietary dermal filler, Restylane, in the treatment of facial wrinkles, deep folds, smile lines and thin superficial lines around the eyes, mouth & forehead. It is also used for shaping facial contours such as the cheeks or chin and lip augmentation.
Restylane is a non-animal derived gel that is injected into the skin with a very fine needle. It consists of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already present in the body. Once in the skin, it works by creating volume and by improving the condition of the dermis.
Restylane can be used alone but is often used in conjunction with anti-wrinkle injections that improve lines and wrinkles by selectively weakening the muscles that cause these.
Treatment can take less than 30 minutes. The needle is very fine so discomfort is usually minor. However anaesthetic creams or injections can be used to reduce the pain of the injections especially in the lips and nasolabial folds. Perlane is now available with local anaesthetic solution within the gel, greatly improving comfort and removing the pain associated with immediate massage required to create an even distribution of the gel in the tissues. The beneficial results of treatment last from 4 to 6 months depending on the individual, with 50% to 80% of the effect lasting more than 6 months. Most patients choose to have further treatment within a year.
A new Restylane product (Vital Light) is now available for the treatment of lines in the neck area. This is injected using a special injector which ensures that each injection delivers the same tiny quantity of product into the skin. Some of our clinic nurses have undergone treatments with Restylane and can give you first hand advice from their own experience.
Side Effects
Side effects are minimal. There may be a mild burning sensation with the injection and some patients may experience redness in the treated area but this will usually cease within 1-2 hours of treatment. Some bruising can occur but this risk of this is minimised by avoiding the use of aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines e.g. ibuprofen for 2 weeks before treatment.
