Eyelid and facial lumps and bumps, and skin lesions, are common. They include chalazions or meibomian cysts, papillomas, warts, styes, skin tags, sebaceous cysts, moles and raised skin blemishes e.g. xanthelasmas (yellow lumps affecting the inner aspect of the eyelids). Many such lumps and bumps are benign but cause cosmetic concerns. Lumps, bumps or skin lesions can also be removed from other areas of the body e.g. sebaceous cysts from the scalp or back, skin tags on the neck.

Your Face & Eye surgeon or dermatologist will assess whether the lesion is benign or potentially malignant and be able to recommend the best treatment to remedy the situation. Often small lumps or lesions can be removed in the clinic treatment room under a simple local anaesthetic. Suspicious lumps are sent to a pathologist for analysis (a biopsy) and a result is available within a few days. Xanthelasmas can be treated with the application of tricholoracetic acid (TCA). For patients who are needle phobic or very anxious, minor surgery can be performed in our operating theatre under "twilight sedation anaesthesia" provided by an anaesthetist.
