Khalid Ikram graduated in medicine from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, at the University of London in 1991. He then trained extensively in ophthalmic surgery in Southampton, Oxford and Manchester. At Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Khalid undertook an advanced specialist training period (fellowship) in corneal and refractive procedures. This involved, uniquely for a UK fellowship, both laser vision correction (excimer laser) and specialized intraocular surgery.

Khalid commenced his NHS consultant post in 2002, working mainly at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. He is also an honorary consultant at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH), one of the largest ophthalmic teaching & training centres in Europe.

In his NHS post, Khalid has extensive responsibilities in the teaching and training of junior ophthalmic surgeons and is the Royal College of Ophthalmologists tutor for ophthalmology at Stepping Hill Hospital, where he is also lead consultant for ophthalmic surgery. As college tutor, Khalid also sits on the regional specialist training committees, selecting individuals for advanced ophthalmic surgical training in the North-West, and also monitoring and assessing and appraising their progress. At MREH, his work includes the supervision and training of the fellow in corneal and refractive surgery.

Khalid also has a particular interest in improving the standards of assessment and planning for cataract and refractive lens surgery, and has run teaching conferences in biometry at both a national and international level.

Having extensive experience in general ophthalmic care and specialising in small incision cataract surgery, Khalid has further developed a considerable expertise in the refractive aspects of such surgery. He is experienced in a large variety of refractive surgery techniques (corneal excimer laser and intraocular lens surgery) for the management of conditions such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) and presbyopia (age related reduction in the eye’s ability to focus on near targets).

Khalid Ikram is a member of the UK and European Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In 2011-12 Khalid was instrumental in helping to bring Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery to the UK, for the first time.

Saj Ataullah graduated from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, London, in 1991. He has over 15 years of experience in ophthalmology (a speciality dedicated to the medical & surgical management of eye disorders). His general ophthalmology training was over a 7 year period in London and Manchester. Subsequently Saj trained extensively in oculoplastic surgery (also called ophthalmic plastic surgery) both internationally and in the UK.

Oculoplastic surgery is a specialised form of plastic surgery that focuses on disorders of the eyelids, eyebrows, tear ducts (the lacrimal drainage system) and the orbit (the bones and tissues that make up the eye socket).

He was appointed as a Consultant Oculoplastic, Lacrimal & Orbital Surgeon in 2002 at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, one of the largest eye hospitals in Europe.

He has a major role in teaching and training of ophthalmic surgeons:

He has co-run an internationally renowned fellowship in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital since 2002. During this time he has trained surgeons from around the world as well as the U.K.
He was appointed as the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Tutor for Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2005

Mr Brian Leatherbarrow BSc MBChB DO FRCS FRCOphth

Mr Leatherbarrow was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmic, Oculoplastic and Orbital surgeon at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe, in July 1992.

He has over 25 years of experience in ophthalmology and has been a specialist Consultant Surgeon for over 20 years. His major areas of expertise are oculoplastic, orbital, and lacrimal surgery for which he has a national and international reputation. He has also performed modern small incision cataract surgery (phacoemulsification) for over 20 years.

He performs 750-1,000 specialist oculoplastic/orbital/lacrimal operations per year and has received referrals of patients requiring such surgery from all over the U.K. and from as far afield as Australia, Africa, Malaysia, Greece, India, Pakistan, Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, the Ukraine and the Middle East.

He graduated from Manchester Medical School in 1982, training in general ophthalmology at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital before undertaking subspecialty training fellowships in oculoplastic and orbital surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, and the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, USA. He is the author of a major textbook ‘Oculoplastic Surgery’ (published by Martin Dunitz, 2002). He has run an internationally renowned subspecialty fellowship for over 20 years, training surgeons from around the world. Cataract Surgery

He was initially trained to do intracapsular cataract surgery in 1984, then to do extracapsular cataract surgery from 1985 to 1991, and then trained to do phacoemulsification surgery as soon as this was introduced in 1992. He did his first femtosecond laser cataract operation at Face & Eye in 2012.

Jan's Story

"My name is Marzena. I am Polish. I would like to share my son’s story.
Jan had a very unfortunate accident at the age of 18 months. During a routine walk he fell down and a thorn of a rose badly injured his right eye. It was a very serious penetrating injury due to which he lost completely his eye sight in his right eye.
After some time the eye became more and more deformed. Apart from abnormal appearance the rising pressure in his right eye was causing strong headaches. When Jan turned 11 it was recommended to remove his sick eye.
We did some research regarding the current options available throughout the world. We finally, came across a recommendation of Mr. Brian Leatherbarrow who specializes in various eye surgeries and is also known for carrying out eye-implant surgeries with excellent results. Mr Leatherbarrow agreed to perform Jan’s surgery. At the same time it turned out that the Surgeon cooperates with a very experienced Ocularist, Mr Robin Brammar. So we came to Manchester with great hope.
Jan underwent his surgery in July 2009 and 2 months later he had his artificial eye fitted.
Jan's artificial eye looks and moves like a real eye. We are extremely happy with the final results of the surgery and the artificial eye work. I cannot even find words to express our gratitude to the wonderful specialists and their gifted hands who changed Jan's appearance"'.
